Fashion Trend That Goes Straight to the Hips

It sounds like a very bad idea: Design clothes with an extra flap of fabric around the part of a woman’s body about which she is most sensitive.
The hip-accentuating peplum is back.
It’s springing from dresses, jackets and pants in stores thanks to high-end designers including Giorgio Armani, Celine and Jason Wu and mainstream retailers like J. Crew and H&M.
Actually, the peplum doesn’t have to be a booty bummer, say designers and retailers. With the right fit, it can be flattering for most women.
Magazine Monday: Spring Trend, Rosettes
Another hot trend for spring are rosettes. Also called florets, or flower, these small three dimensional flowers add a touch of femininity and spring to what ever you are wearing. Rosettes are great on accessories, as seen here, but they also add whimsey to dresses and tops, like the Moschino purple chiffon blouse. If rosettes seem too girly, try a floret made out of leather, like the blue pumps below. Adding a flower to a conservative knit dress, like the Raul Blanco red and black knit dress can make it feel more youthful and modern. No matter how you choose to wear a flower, it is an easy way to freshen up your spring wardrobe.

A Vintage Prom Dress Passes the Test
As more and more high schools tighten the dress code for prom, high school
students are turning to vintage prom dresses as the solution. Not only are they more affordable, but they also tend to be more conservative, complying with the dress codes of most schools.
Today’s dresses are all about selling sex appeal. It is very difficult for a 17 or 18 year old girl to find a dress that is appropriate, a dress that isn’t too sexy on one hand, and isn’t little girly on the other. The optimal dress is a happy medium of sophisticated, and classy, not trashy, and that is surprisingly hard to find, in retail stores at least.
Magazine Monday: Gold Coin Jewelry
People used to keep their lucky coin in their pocket, but now, wear it as jewelry, and you’ll be right on trend. Pictured above: Ciner Gold Coin Necklace from Back In Style
Thursday Threads: Vintage Look A Like. DYI and save $200!
This Alice & Olivia cotton cardigan sweater is a whopping $330! Here, Sheffield MacIntyre from BackInStyle.com shows you how you can do it yourself for around $100. Our example even includes a cashmere sweater, and will only set you back $145, still less than half of the Alice & Olivia version.
First, find any cardigan sweater that fits you well. It can be cotton, cashmere, silk, what ever feels and fits best. The one shown above is a vintage Neiman Marcus cream cashmere sweater, and only costs $75!

Trend Alert: Tribal!
TRIBAL Prints are IN!

Bold bright colors, Tribal prints and African and Asian motifs are here to stay. Designers Donna Karan, Michael Kors and BCBG have all included these fun and colorful prints in their collections for spring 2012. Adding these fun patterns to your wardrobe is a great way to draw inspiration from all over the world. Try to mix animal prints with bold solid colors. You can accessorize this look by donning wooden earrings or bangles.

Magazine Monday: Spring’s Trickiest Trend, the bra top
I know you thought this trend was difficult to pull off, but paired with a cardigan (wear it buttoned up if you’re still feeling insecure), the bra top goes from risque to demure.
Our vintage Emilio Pucci bras, in bright retro prints, are the perfect piece to showcase this trend.
Wear with cigarette pants and channel Audrey Hepburn or Marilyn Monroe. Wear with skinny jeans, or leather pants for a 1980s Madonna throwback.
Fashion Week Takes Trends from Vintage Fashion
The Comeback of Vintage
The schedule for Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week, which began yesterday and runs through Feb. 16, is jampacked with runway shows, parties, and events. But given Catherine Malandrino’s recent Flea visit (not to mention Maggie Gyllenhaal, Padma Lakshmi, Ethan Hawke, and Ezra Koenig from Vampire Weekend making the rounds), don’t be surprised if a few fashionistas steal away this weekend to see what’s showing at Skylight One Hanson. And those who do will probably like what they see since many of the vintage looks offered at the Flea last weekend looked remarkably similar to those shown on the Spring 2012 Fashion Week runways last fall.

Trend Alert: Fur Collared Coats
They say everything comes back in style, and what was old is new again. Well, apparently that applies to 1970s style winter coats with fur collars. This Marc Jacobs ad from this season features a coat that looks remarkably similar to the vintage ones we offer at BackInStyle.com. I wonder if the price tag is the same. Ours are around $150, do you think Marc Jacob’s are about that price?
